Queuing for Waffles and Donuts
01 July 2007 : GST hike to 7%
The latest fads these days - Holey and ang-moh desserts.
Some time ago, ST ran a feature on 'ang-mo' food in local hawker centres. Alas the Belgian Waffles stall at Golden Mile Food Centre is no longer a secret!!
We parked across the road at Golden Mile Complex (Singapore's very own little Thailand) and walked across to the food centre only to be greeted by a long queue! But the wait was worth it and the Belgian dark chocolate is definitely worth the sin!
The prices are very reasonable - a simple waffle and chocolate dip set costs $2.50 while 2 waffles and dip cost $4.20. They also serve a very popular claypot fondue set for $14.80. We looked longingly at some claypots that were returned to the stall still half full, because we virtually licked our little bowl clean! We have tried their homemade SUPER-LEMON and Banana ice creams and both were very good.
How long will the queues last? Only time will tell.. Their neighbours must be green with envy of their good business and long queues. While you're there, don't forget to try the famous Ah-Balling (glutinous rice balls) and peanut soup and also the claypot rice. The Thai stall next door is also pretty good.
An even longer queue was the one at Donut Factory (Raffles City basement). We gawked at the number of people who were actually waiting patiently in line for these little things with holes in the middle (or some with cream/filling). The queue breaks at the 'intersection' and started again on the other side of the corridor. They've even put up signs on how to queue and how not to call up for advance orders as those would be futile! Amazing...
Mag wanted to buy some donuts for her colleagues so we went to an alternative donut place called Summer House Donut at Burlington Square, Bencoolen Street. There were no queues there today. I couldn't resist having a dark chocolate one ;-) It wasn't too bad either!
Here's a comparison of various Donut places in Singapore. Interesting.. This reminds me of the time when I gave Mag my very own comparison of various brands of potato chips... 20 years ago!! Gulp!!

I tried the waffle a few weeks back. I thk is it too buttery. Felt a bit sick after eating half of it.
U like it?
Ya! We were enjoying the yummy Belgian chocolate dip and using the waffle to scoop up the brown gooey liquid! Didn't notice the buttery taste because it was ALL CHOCOLATE for me! LOL... Now I need a drink of water because your comment made me feel like I'm gagging on the dough...!
